Solo from November, one of three solos in Thorndike’s work shape[no]context, was first presented in the Young Feminist Artists series of the UVa Women’s Center. The dancer inhabits a constantly shifting space, embodying the tension between spontaneous emotional expression and the prescribed movements of social interaction. Enveloped in the intensely focused sonic environment of Swendsen’s score, the choreography explores the translation of gesture into full-body shapes, as with each pass of the stage, the dancer revisits the choice between introspection and external acknowledgement.
